How to Model Allen Key M16 using Autodesk Inventor
In the preview class we created a simple gear, you will notice we didn’t specify any standard unit that was because it was just a simple gear with no design consideration or dimension.
What if we have a project with specified dimensions and design consideration(which will always be the case most of the time). This time around Allen Key M16 has Standard dimensions and design consideration. Hence, to create this ensure you open a Metric file for it.
1. Open new file, Under template(upper left corner) click metric, under metric click Standard(mm) ipt, then click create. Ipt is the Inventor part extension.
2.Pick Create 2D sketch and click the edge of the front plane as shown in the image below, yours might take you to the front plane automatically don’t be startled you are fine.
3.Pick the polygon tool in the draw panel, in the dialogue box input 6 and pick inscribe, move your cursor to origin and click it as your starting point, from the origin move your cursor outward and your will notice an hexagon being formed, drop at any point.
4. Dimension it as shown below. use the horizontal constraint on one of the sides and finish sketch.
5.We need a plane that is perpendicular to our initial sketch. Go to the browser bar expand your origin by clicking on the + sign, from the drop downs pick any plane that is perpendicular to our first drawing.
6.From the image below XZ plane works fine for me, yours might not be XZ plane but ensure it is perpendicular to the hexagon plane and pick Create 2D sketch.
7. Draw as shown below and finish sketch. inverted L-shape with a fillet of 20mm
8.Pick the sweep tool, Pick the hexagon drawn as profile and pick the L-shape as path and click OK.
There we have it, M16 Allen key with standard dimensions.
